You’ll end up where you’re meant to be.

Go with the flow.

As hard as the job was, I would recommend it because I made some amazing friends there, the pay was fair and I was able to get all my days done.

I expected it to be hard work because I had never done anything like this at all! I’d never done any kind of physical job and I wasn’t sure how I was going to get through it. The Monotony was hardest of all… packing fruit for 8-10 hours a day 5-6 days a week takes a toll on you both physically and mentally. You have a lot of time to think but you have to stay focused and it’s hard to do the same thing all day every day for so long. We faced a lot of pressure to pack perfectly and quickly, and sometimes I felt like no matter what I did I couldn’t get it right.

But focusing on my friendships and sharing the hardships with my work friends (we all lived together too) made it easier. We found ourselves able to laugh about the things that frustrated us and I just tried not to bring the stresses of the job home with me. I reminded myself that I was only there for 88 days, this isn’t my forever the way it is for some of the people I worked with. At the end of the day, I just had fun with my roommates at home and tried to make memories there that would serve as the important takeaways from my farm work experience.

I don’t think I’d do anything differently. I had a vision of what I wanted my farm work to be like (Queensland, warm weather, near the beach) and what I ended up doing couldn’t have been further from that (Victoria, winter, very far from the ocean). But I took the work when it was offered to me and I always felt like it was meant to be for me to end up on that farm.

So I guess my advice would be: don’t get too caught up in your expectations, you’ll end up where you’re meant to be.

There’s no doubt the work is tough but the experience is what you make of it. Once I got to know them, my supervisors became my friends and that made work so much easier and more enjoyable. Though it was hard to say this during the experience, now that it’s over I can say I’m happy that I did my farm work there because I can’t imagine it any other way.
